Mark Your Calendars for Homecoming 2014
Please mark your calendars and plan to join us on October 11 as the Vols take on our sister campus, UT Chattanooga, for Homecoming 2014! Smokey vs. Mocs!
A look back at Cirque du Rocky Top
Cirque du Rocky Top was the theme of Homecoming 2013 and has left the center ring to make way for next year’s Homecoming on October 11 against another UT – UT Chattanooga! The theme for 2013 encompassed many festive activities from Greek competitions to attending the football game.
The Europa and the Bull fountain was dyed UT orange again this year marking the start of homecoming week here in Knoxville. The Student Alumni Associates met Monday afternoon to turn the fountain orange. Many enjoyed this new tradition throughout the week up until game day posing for pictures and videos.
Student activities, including Greek competitions, began at the first of the week and continued all of Homecoming week. After decorating floats, the hanging of the banners at the stadium, and campus lawn decorations, Alpha Gamma Rho and Zeta Tau Alpha came out on top with the overall homecoming award.
On Friday, November 8, hundreds of people made their way to the campus streets to watch the annual parade go by. This year’s grand marshal was UT Alumna Carol Aebersold, creator of Elf on the Shelf®. She was accompanied by her husband, Bob. The parade included the band, cheerleaders, and Smokey as well as student artwork designed by East Tennessee native and Emmy award-winning set designer Wayne White.
This year marked the fourth annual Little Vol Walk. More than 70 children ages 10 and under dressed up and rode in decorated strollers and wagons to participate in the homecoming parade with their families. This year, the Little Vols honored Carol Aebersold by screening The Elf on the Shelf®
TV Special, making UT Christmas ornaments, eating milk and cookies, and handing out orange and white reindeer food.
Alumni also had the chance to tour the new and improved Natalie L. Haslam Music Center during its open house Friday evening. The music center is the new home for the Pride of the Southland Band, as well as all music specific classes, and is located behind the newly renovated home of the beloved “Rock.”
Saturday began with a multitude of early morning and afternoon tailgates, BBQs, pig roasts, and cookouts held by various colleges, organizations, and fans campus wide serving as fundraisers, get-togethers, and outreaches. While tailgating, fans were able to enjoy the Pride of the Southland Band march to the stadium followed by more than 300 alumni band members playing along with them.
Saturday also hosted our annual “Party in the Park” in Circle Park all morning before kickoff. Participants enjoyed massive amounts of orange and white, great food, arts and crafts, giveaways, and a taste of the world’s largest Moon Pie.
It was a good week and weekend for UT alums, friends, and fans.
