The University of Tennessee, Knoxville has set its sights on an ambitious goal. UT currently ranks 46th among America's best public colleges and universities. Our aspiration is to join the top 25.
Twenty-five is not just a number in a strategic plan. It represents astounding academic achievement, a commitment to graduating outstanding young men and women, excellence in research, and life-altering positive change for our students, their families, and the people of Tennessee.
No aspect of daily life in this state goes unaffected by the work being done here at UT. Along with improving the quality of education for the next generation of Tennessee citizens and workers, the journey to the top 25 will create new economic opportunities, it will expand access to higher education, and it will share the multifaceted benefits--along with the simple pleasures--of intellectual discovery.
Top 25 Students
Our students are arriving on campus prepared for this journey. In fact, our most recent freshman classes have entered with higher average ACT scores than those at many peer institutions. In other words, we already have top 25 students. Now, we need to provide them with a top 25 educational experience.

The challenge is figuring out how to do more with less. Since 2009, UT has experienced a 30% decrease in its recurring, base allocations from the state. This year, as America celebrates the 150th anniversary of land-grant universities, Tennessee's flagship campus will receive $60 million less from the state than it received just three years ago. As a result, the most immediate goals of this journey--recruiting and retaining top faculty, increasing need- and merit-based scholarships, and funding graduate student fellowships--simply cannot be achieved without private gift support.
