Tennessee Apprentice

In 2009, the Office of Alumni Affairs began a new Tennessee tradition with the establishment of the Tennessee Apprentice Program. The program is a job shadowing opportunity that connects alumni with students who wish to learn more about a specific career field. The Tennessee Apprentice Program enables students to shadow alumni in Knoxville, in their hometowns, or in another city of their choice during March and April.

As an "alumni host" for the program, you will be asked to allow a student to shadow you for one mutually agreed upon day during March or April. Hosts are expected to give participating students a taste of daily life in their respective field of interest.

Some of our previous hosts shared ideas regarding the hosting experience with us, and we've collected them here for your review.

The Tennessee Apprentice Program is for any UT Knoxville undergraduate student who is interested in an opportunity to get an inside view of a career field of interest.

The purpose of the program is to connect current undergraduate students with Tennessee alumni for a one-day job shadowing experience. An apprenticeship allows students to explore potential future careers and connect with alumni who have been in your shoes and want to help gude you in the right directions.

Students may find that a prospective field is just what they had always hoped it would be—or they may find that a field of interest is much different than expected. Interested students have nothing to lose, and a lot to gain, by signing up for the program.

“My visit was certainly invaluable to my personal and professional development. I will certainly take their advice to heart and will keep their suggestions in mind as I move toward a full-time career. It was truly a pleasure to learn from such a talented group of people. It was a great opportunity to network with career professionals, discuss trends within the industry and spend the day in a new city. I would definitely recommend the Tennessee Apprentice Program to my friends.”
