History of the Golden Grad Reunion
In the fall of 1937, the late Vic Davis, executive secretary of the General Alumni Association, Dr. James D. Hoskins, and several faculty members met to discuss plans for a Golden Reunion of the 50-year class each year at commencement. This reunion was inaugurated June 5-6, 1938. Invitations were sent to members of the Class of 1888 and all who graduated before that time. Golden Grads came from as far away as New York and New Mexico. President and Mrs. James D. Hoskins entertained the alums at a reception, and the Alumni Association hosted a luncheon. They attended the baccalaureate sermon and were the guests of honor at commencement. They toured Norris Dam and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.
The 50th class reunion continues to leave memorable, lasting impressions. Alumni returning for the celebration enjoy spending time with each other, having conversation with deans and faculty members regarding new research projects, seeing the campus of today and interacting with current students.
Here's what past participants have written about their 50th
class reunion:
- "I didn't think I would know anyone but I saw lots of
people I remembered."
- "Thank you for making our time so
entertaining."
- "I enjoyed reuniting with my friends. Keep up
the good
work."
- "I found the whole program excellent."
- "Thank
you for all you did to make our reunion an event
to be remembered and treasured."
- "Thanks you for a
great reunion."
- "An excellent program."
Once a golden
grad always a golden grad!
